In Europe, manufacturers must declare that electronic equipment meets the protection requirements of the EMC Directive. Other directives may also be applicable and should be investigated before placing a CE mark on a unit. A list of directives can be found in the Official Journal (OJ).

The current directive is the 2004 Directive. (2004|108|EEC) This Directive applies from 20th July 2007. There is a two year transitional period to 20th July 2009, by which time all products must comply with the protection requirements of the 2004 Directive.
